3.5 Villanelle (Kiss This Guy)

Posted: April 24, 2010 in Uncategorized

So, I’m discovering the trick with the villanelle is first of all to pick repeating lines that can mean a variety of things. I haven’t really done that yet. My lines can mean something if I tweak them, but I’m not taking enough time to choose the ones that can have multiple meanings yet.

The second trick to the villanelle, it seems, is to find a way to use those multi-use lines in all their uses and meanings and definitions and contexts. The combination of these two elements are what seem to be necessary to move a villanelle from “an exercise in form” to a “great poem.”

I haven’t accomplished any of these yet, although I’m certainly having fun with the form itself. Couple more days to keep playing around with it though.

Breaking Up With Lady Mondegreen

*
Can’t say hello, can’t say goodbye,
won’t let go, won’t hold tight,
so ‘scuse me while I kiss this guy.
*
It’s not a ploy to make you fly,
just tired of standing in mid-plight —
can’t say hello, can’t say goodbye.
*
You’ve found a girl who caught your eye,
with a sweeter mouth and a softer bite,
‘so scuse me while I kiss this guy.
*
He’s not that hot, I cannot lie
but his voice is like a bird in flight.
Can’t say hello, can’t say goodbye —
*
when his mouth is settled on my thigh
I lose my will and all my might,
so ‘scuse me while I kiss this guy.
*
I was willing to give it one more try —
this isn’t something in which I delight —
but we can’t say hello, can’t say goodbye.
so ‘scuse me while I snog this guy.
